Liquid matrix SHS manufacturing and heat treatment of Al–Mg composites reinforced with fine titanium carbide

Aluminum matrix composites reinforced with ultra-fine refractory titanium carbide feature a unique combination of properties. They are promising structural materials. Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) is an affordable and energy-saving composite making process. It involves the exothermic reaction between carbon (or their compounds) directly in melt. We studied properties SHS based on AMg2 AMg6 commercially available alloys 10 wt.%TiC. investigated macroand microstructure samples XRD EDS analysis. was found that β-phase separated from α-solid solution aluminum as early air cooling stage. conducted experiments aimed at studying effects additional heating sample structure optimal temperature time values. also proposed phenomenological model transformation sequence. compared physical, mechanical, manufacturing corrosion resistance original cold-hardened AMg2N AMg6N before after heat treatment. reduces porosity maintains electrical conductivity. compressive strength relative strain alloy change insignificantly, while for AMg6-based reduction more significant. Heat treatment increases hardness maintaining sufficient plastic deformation. confirmed by measured values ratio close to alloys. retain high dioxide hydrogen sulfide corrosion.
